2008 Outstanding Graduating Senior

Omar Badri

Omar Badri has been selected by the W. P. Carey School of Business Honors and Awards Committee as 2008 recipient of the Turken Family Outstanding Graduating Senior Award.  The award recognizes one student each semester that excels academically and displays strong leadership and community activism.

Omar will receive a Bachelor of Science in Economics degree with a 4.15 GPA from the W. P. Carey School of Business. He will also graduate from Barrett, The Honors College.  Omar is an ASU President’s Scholar, a member of Beta Gamma Sigma Honorary Society and recipient of multiple scholarships at ASU.  Omar is active in student organizations, social service, volunteering in the community, and international.  His volunteer experience includes People to People Program, Foundation for the International Medical Relief of Children, Banner Hospital, Las Fuentes Nonprofit Health Clinic and the International Rescue Committee. Omar’s campus involvement includes President of the FIMRC-ASU, Dean’s Advisory Board, and ASU Devil’s Advocates.

Additionally, Omar has participated in several intern programs including service as an undergraduate researcher under the direction of Dr. John Chaput at the ASU BioDesign Institute and currently as a research intern at TGen.  Upon graduation, Omar will attend Harvard Medical and Harvard Business Schools as part of a joint MD/MBA program.  In addition to becoming a medical doctor, Omar plans to manage a research institution and contribute to public policy as an economist and doctor.  Dr. Jose Mendez, economics professor, who first met Omar two years ago, comments, “In my 29 years teaching I have only come across one other individual who exhibits the same combination of brilliance, moral character and commitment to helping others.  Omar has a genuine and real desire to help humanity.  He views education as a way to improve our world.”
