INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS
AIESEC
AIESEC, (pronounced as one word; originally an acronym for Association Internationale des Etudiants en Sciences Economiques et Commerciales) is an international, non-profit, non-political, organization run by students and recent graduates of institutions of higher education. It is an international platform for young people to discover and develop their potential so as to have a positive impact on society. The AIESEC network as of February 2008 includes 25,000 students in 105 countries at over 1,100 universities across the globe, and realizes around 5,000 exchanges yearly. Its goal is "to expand the understanding of a national by expanding the understanding of the individuals, changing the world one person at a time."
The AIESEC chapter at ASU is part of such worldwide association of students engaged in the promotion of cross cultural understanding through the process of exchange. The organization places students around the world in companies and institutions as trainees with the opportunity to choose the location, type of industry and skill specialty they wish to acquire plus customize the duration of the internship. AIESEC members provide applicants with assistance in not only finding such prospects but offers pre-deployment training programs to get the student prepared for the foreign assignment. Their numerous student chapters in countries provide on-site mentoring and assistance to support the experience. The local chapter in conjunction with their worldwide network enables members to act as a global clearing house for internship opportunities. They work not only with potential trainees for overseas placement but are instrumental in finding local business to support foreign students coming to the greater Phoenix area. Beyond such activities, members enjoy a wide array of social activities to promote diversity and further cross cultural understanding so important in the era of globalization.
Please consult the AIESEC website for further information. Professor Lawrence A. Beer, of the W. P. Carey School of Business is the faculty advisor to the local AIESEC chapter.
