Health Sector Management SpecializationThe specialization in Health Sector Management is designed to introduce students to the unique aspects of health care markets and the special challenges of managing in the health care sector. These challenges include an unusual concentration of: non-competitive markets; third-party payers; monopolistic providers; and government involvement as payer, provider, and regulator. Employment in the health sector is growing at an average annual rate of 2.3 percent, and increases in health services employment continue to exceed those in the rest of the total private economy. There are excellent job opportunities in this growth industry for MBA graduates with specialized knowledge of health sector management. The specialization in Health Sector Management requires nine hours of HSM coursework. All courses are part of the core requirements for the Master in Health Sector Management (MHSM) program, so students who take the specialization have the option of counting those credits toward a concurrent MBA/MHSM degree.
